"The Guardian" report: Albania-Serbia challenge in the face of the 2014 chaos in Belgrade
Nick Ames, The Guardian
Outside a café three blocks from the National Arena, two men stood on chairs, attaching attachments to a tent they were erecting. Thursday lunch had just passed, and Tirana was preparing for a match that could have filled the national stadium at least 10-fold. There was no problem identifying Albania’s flag, the double-headed black eagle stretching from the center of the tent. The second flag being raised had also become commonplace. It bore the word “Autochtonous,” depicting a version of the map of “Greater Albania” that transformed a soccer match into a major diplomatic incident in 2014.
By Friday morning, however, that flag had been replaced with its less provocative alternative. Perhaps the authorities had stepped in to calm things down. They want to eliminate potential triggers for the kind of chaos that erupted in Belgrade 11 years ago, when a drone brought the controversial image to the Partizani stadium during a European Championship qualifier between Serbia and Albania. The repercussions of that night extended beyond sport, and there were sighs of relief when, the following November, a revenge match in the provincial town of Elbasan passed off without major incident. Faces certainly clashed in the palms of the hands of the two countries’ football associations last December, however, when they were drawn together in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Eyebrows were raised, but there was nothing to stop them meeting again: despite a long and bloody history, the freshest wounds of which were inflicted during the war in Kosovo with mainly ethnic Albanians, the nations are not in active conflict. Neither has sought to keep their distance from each other. It was inevitable that the problem of regulating their relations around football stadiums would one day resurface.
No human resources are being spared for the match in Tirana. Around 2,000 police will be deployed for the first Group K meeting of the two sides on Saturday evening, including special forces and counter-terrorism operatives. In addition, sources suggest that up to 500 plainclothes officers will be deployed among the 22,500 fans in the crowd. The away fans will be absent. Anti-drone devices are being installed in the surrounding area and potential offenders have been warned that their devices will be shot down from the sky.
The only distraction during Albania's training session on Thursday evening was a group of diligently deployed sprinklers, whose presence was hardly unwelcome in temperatures reaching 30 degrees Celsius. Elseid Hysaj, the Lazio full-back, is the only member of the squad who played in the Belgrade fiasco.
“We don’t have to repeat the images of previous years,” he said. “The coach has asked us not to panic about this match. We need calm and emotional balance.” Sylvinho, the coach in question and one of the most polite characters in international football, joked as he played with his staff, but he is under pressure to produce results. The same can be said for Dragan Stojkovic, his counterpart. England, who complete the top five in Group K with Latvia and Andorra, are considered almost certain winners of the group by both camps. Albania and Serbia know they are fighting for a playoff spot and that their meetings, the second of which takes place in four months, will be decisive.
At 1:40 p.m. local time on Friday, Serbia’s players arrived at their hotel a mile west of Tirana’s city center. Armed officers from RENEA, Albania’s anti-terrorist force, escorted two buses that had traveled from the airport under escort. The first step of a weekend-long operation had gone smoothly. If this continues, perhaps the specter of October 14, 2014, will finally begin to fade from view.
