At least six people have died in a tragic maritime accident near the island of El Hierro, in the Canary Islands archipelago, after a boat carrying around 180 migrants capsized while being escorted to the port of La Restinga.

According to Spanish state broadcaster TVE, the tragedy occurred when many passengers shifted to one side of the vessel, causing it to lose balance and capsize. Footage shows migrants, including children, falling into the water as they try to grab onto a lifeboat.

Emergency crews tried to save as many people as possible by throwing life jackets and using helicopters to transport survivors to safe areas. The intervention was immediate, but unfortunately failed to save the lives of the six migrants.

According to the Spanish Interior Ministry, migration via this route was particularly high in 2024, marking a historic record of arrivals from West Africa. However, 2025 saw a slight decrease in the flow, but not in the risk.

The route to the Canary Islands is considered one of the most dangerous for migrants, due to the long distance, difficult sea conditions, and the use of unsuitable sailing vessels.

Data from the organization "Walking Borders" shows that in the first five months of 2024 alone, around 4,800 people lost their lives trying to cross this sea route to Spain from countries such as Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal and Gambia.
