31 dead after Israeli attack near Gaza aid center

At least 31 people have been killed and more than a hundred wounded in an attack on an aid distribution center in Rafah, southern Gaza, the Hamas-run health ministry says.

A local Palestinian journalist told the BBC that Israeli tanks opened fire near an aid center.

An incident was also reported near another aid distribution center in the Netzarim Corridor, in central Gaza - the Palestine Red Crescent says 14 people were injured.

The US-Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which runs the aid center, says the reports are "fabricated" - the Israeli military says it is unaware of any injuries caused by their fire inside the aid distribution site.

Israel imposed a total blockade on Gaza and resumed its military offensive against Hamas on March 18, shattering a two-month ceasefire.

A military campaign was launched by Israel in Gaza in response to Hamas's cross-border attack on October 7, 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.

At least 54,418 people have been killed in Gaza during the war, according to the territory's health ministry.
