Many people prefer to keep their phone next to their bed at night, to send a message like "Good night", to listen to relaxing music or to set the morning alarm.

But experts warn that this widespread habit can be dangerous and should be stopped immediately.

Apple itself has issued a warning to users who charge their phones under their pillows, as this can lead to overheating and become a potential fire hazard. The warning comes at a time when all countries are facing heat waves and extreme temperatures.

Apple has also raised concerns about dust and dirt that can accumulate in the charging port, further increasing the risk of fire.

"Do not sleep on the device, the charger, or place the devices under a blanket, pillow, or under your body while they are charging," Apple warned.

The tech giant emphasizes that failure to follow these safety instructions could lead to fire, electric shock, injury, or damage to the iPhone or other devices.

The British company Firechief Global, which specializes in fire safety solutions, has also issued a similar warning: charging your phone under a pillow or blanket poses a serious fire risk.

"Phones generate heat while charging and, if covered with a pillow or blanket, this heat can be amplified, increasing the risk of overheating and the possibility of a fire," said the company's managing director, Laurie Pollard.

He added that overcharging, meaning leaving the phone on charge overnight, is one of the main causes of fires related to lithium-ion batteries.

Pollard advises against charging phones on bedside tables, especially if they are made of flammable materials. Instead, he recommends charging devices on flat, open surfaces, away from materials that can easily catch fire.

Although most modern phones are equipped with overcharge protection systems, the risk remains if these systems fail.
